Data Space

Inside the agrifood sector, data management is becoming a much more important element. The supply chain are complex, they involve many players for dimentions, skills and technologies, and generate informations that have to be shared in a clear, secure and reliable way.

The Data Space concept places itself just in this scenario, a model devised to exceed the usual solution limits, frequently closed or too centralise, using platforms that emphasize the dependence from a unique manager.

A Data Space is a distribuited environment which many organizations can share informations in, remaining however, plently owners and sovereign of their own data. This means that any stackolder can determine:

  • which data can be provided;
  • who let them available to;
  • for which scope and which they will be the limits.

International Data Spaces Association (IDSA) standards provide the concept anch technical infrastructure to buid an ecosystem. IDS Connector i one of the most important component, a smart interface that rules tha data access and applies the use policies defined by the owner. The TRUE Connector is an industrial implementation of an IDS Connector, developed by Engineering Ingegneria Informatica. Within Data Spaces based on IDSA specifications, the connector is the central component that allows the various players to exchange data in secure mode, controlled and compliant with the principles of data sovereignty. See the official documentation on: TRUE Connector

A agrifood contex, this setting is particularly useful, many different players (farming companies, transformers, analysis laboratories, logistics, certification authorities) can exchange data without giving up their own autonomy or informations security.

The de-centrilized approach of Data Space let integrate existing systems gradually, often legacy, without having to substitute or redesign again from scratch. Moreover, it introduce a new trust level: not based on informal agreement or on a single intermediary but build direclty into architecture by protocols, standards and control inner workings of datum usage.

In summary, Data Spaces represent a sharing data model based on de-centralization, ownership of data and interoperability. They allow to indipendent organizations to share informations in a secure mode, keeping access control and data usage. The IDS (International Data Spaces) architecture provides the standard, information models and connectors such as TRUE connector, essential to enable reliable and traceble data exchange.
